Nothing about us without us: the what, why and how of patient and public involvement and engagement

To ensure that research and its outcomes meets the needs of patients and public it is vital that they are engaged and involved in its design and delivery. But how can we ensure that this engagement and involvement is meaningful? On this introductory, practical course – designed for and with patients, public and researchers – you will learn about the what, why and how of patient and public involvement and engagement. You will gain an understanding of the issues and challenges, including diversity and inclusion. You will explore and reflect on the techniques for sharing power and developing relationships to ensure the patient and public voice is heard and has an impact. Finally, you will learn how to develop and apply solutions to these issues and challenges.

Consultancy services

Ensuring that the patient and public voice is woven throughout the research process in a meaningful way can be challenging. We will work in partnership with you, ease your workload and offer expertise on improving or supporting various aspects of patient and public involvement and engagement at any, or all, stages of your research.

Proposals

We provide advice and guidance on your patient and public involvement and engagement plans in your research proposal.

Recruitment

We help you find people to be involved in your research. We will reach out to community organisations and use existing networks to find people.

Throughout projects

We provide ongoing support throughout the journey of your research project. For example, by supporting or facilitating public involvement activities or events, monitoring and improving your involvement plans and providing training on public involvement and/or coproduction.

Evaluation

We evaluate the patient and public involvement and engagement activities in your project and make recommendations for improvement.

Bespoke training service

We will work with you to develop tailored workshops and training that fit the needs of your project and people. We will create interactive training to support your team’s (staff and public) development around patient and public involvement and engagement in health and social care research. Training can take place online, in-person or a mix of both.

Annual Summer Schools

 Effective and meaningful patient and public involvement is essential to the design and delivery of health and social care research. But what is it, why do we do it, how do we do it effectively and what does good and inclusive involvement look like?

This course will provide you with answers and equip learners with the necessary basic knowledge and skills to do it effectively. The course begins by introducing learners to what is meant by patient and public involvement and its value in research. It goes on to:

  • Explore patient and public involvement throughout the research lifecycle
  • Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in patient and public involvement
  • Explain the UK public involvement standards and apply them to research scenarios
